Currently featuring in Brand SA’s Inside South Australia news, Professor Jason Eglinton and the University’s barley breeding team have scored a big win with Compass, the malting barley developed here and first available to growers in early 2015. With that season now behind us, farmers are confirming outstanding results in spite of tough growing conditions; Compass has delivered yield increases of around 10% along with excellent quality.

Compass, like the many successful varieties before it, is the result of many years’ painstaking work and builds on the UA program’s reputation for delivering breakthrough varieties for both commercial release and for specific company partnership purposes. More than 50% of the barley now grown in Australia originated at the Waite.
