Analysis, identification, exploration.

The University of Adelaide’s Adelaide Analytical laboratory provides Australian researchers with vital infrastructure and expertise to remain at the forefront of international agricultural, food and wine research. We use complex analytical tools to address key fundamental and applied scientific questions.

Adelaide Analytical is a new facility established at the Waite campus to provide researchers with fast, accurate results on plants, food and beverage analyses. Adelaide Analytical includes a full suite of state-of-the-art instrumentation for qualitative and quantitative analyses of non- volatile and volatile compounds in a wide range of matrices.

High performance instrumentation

Our highly sensitive instrumentation is capable of quantifying compounds at trace levels and can be used effectively for compound exploration and examining compositional differences between samples. A summary of our available instruments and potential target analytes are provided below.

Non-volatile analysis

Agilent Ultra high performance liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (UHPLC-QQQ-MS)

This is extremely useful for quantification at ppt concentrations, it is extremely sensitive for the analysis of peptides and screening of compound groups including:

  • anthocyanins
  • quercetins
  • peptides
  • carotenoids
  • vitamins

Agilent high performance liquid chromatography-time of flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QTOF-MS)

This is extremely useful for untargeted, structural identification and screening of compound groups like

  • anthocyanins
  • quercetins
  • peptides
  • quercetins

Agilent high performance liquid chromatography-gel permeation chromatography/size exclusion chromatography (HPLC-GPC/SEC)

This is mainly used for the measurement of polymer chains in solution which assists with molecular weight and size determination for compound groups such as:

  • protein aggregation
  • polysaccharides
  • polyolefins, guar gums etc

Agilent high performance liquid chromatography-ion mobility -time of flight mass spectrometry (HPLC-Ion Mobility QTOF-MS)

This instrument is especially useful for untargeted analysis, structural identification, screening and has an extra dimension of ion mobility separation of in-class isomers. It is useful for complex, isobaric compound groups such as:

  • glycans
  • lipids
Volatiles analysis

Agilent gas chromatography mass spectrometers (GC-MSs)

This is mostly used for volatile compound quantification and screening. It can be used for vast applications including food analysis, environmental impurities, and chemical analysis. It can detect compound groups including:

  • esters
  • alcohols
  • terpenes
  • C6 compounds
  • fermentation derived volatiles etc
