The Embassy of France in Australia is organising a Hackathon, titled  « Tech for Sustainability Hackathon – your ideas in energy, environment, social sciences and health » which will take place at Adelaide University on 22–23 June 2026.

This two-day event will be organised in partnership with Adelaide University, the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and the French–Australian Laboratory for Human–Machine Teaming (the IRL Crossing), and offers a unique opportunity for young French and Australian researchers, regardless of their field of expertise, to develop a start-up proposal and create a new business or service over a relatively short period of time. The event will conclude with a conference dedicated to AI and sustainability with high-level speakers involved in a multi-stakeholder dialogue (academia, policymakers, industries). An awards ceremony and a networking session will then close the two-day Hackathon.

Participants will be challenged to transform cutting-edge research into tangible real-world applications, discover how business and innovation ecosystems can support scientific creativity, and learn to bridge the gap between research complexity and market expectations. The theme of this edition will give participants the opportunity to explore a range of strategic topics: innovation, sustainable development, energy transition, green technologies, artificial intelligence and more.

PhD students and early career researchers from Australia and the French Pacific territories are eligible to apply. Masters’ degree students from diverse disciplines, backgrounds, and nationalities are also encouraged to apply. Participants should be willing to work in teams, have a passion for problem-solving, and be available for the entire duration of the hackathon. Participants should be able to interact in English.
