The OzMedicago seeks to improve soil heath

From Stock Journal, posted 12 February, 2026

The OzMedicago Project will build a world-first genotype-to-phenotype resource for annual Medicago species by sequencing and analysing more than 750 accessions across five species. Project partners include Adelaide University and its Waite Research Institute, and SARDI through the Australian Pastures Genebank. Other partners are the Australian Plant Phenomics Network, Bioplatforms Australia, the Australian Wine Research Institute and Metabolomics Australia.

The project will create an open dataset that integrates genomic and phenotypic information, including the quantification of natural secondary metabolites such as saponins and tannins, which have the potential to reduce methane emissions from grazing ruminants.
