SARDI’s satellite imagery tracks pulsating bloom

Parts of South Australia are still experiencing the effects of the ongoing microalgae bloom, Karenia mikimotoi.

Since September 2024, a marine heatwave has been impacting southern Australia, bringing unusually warm ocean temperatures. These conditions are thought to be contributing to the persistence of the bloom.

As the bloom shifts with changing weather and water conditions, its impacts on local communities remain variable and difficult to predict.
