We share in congratulating Professor Matthew Gilliham who was awarded the University Award for Outstanding Achievement in the category of Excellence in Research (Academic).

Professor Gilliham was presented with the award at a ceremony last Thursday 16th November, recognising his significant contribution to his field of study and research at the University of Adelaide.

As Director of the Waite Research Institute, Professor Gilliham has stimulated and supported the development of multidisciplinary, University-wide research across agriculture, food, and wine. Alongside this work, he has recruited and developed world-leading talent including DECRA, Future Making, Mortlock and Future Fellows, as well as being involved in initiatives such as the ARC Training Centre for Future Crops Development, ARC Training Centre for Innovative Wine Production, SA Drought Hub and ARC Centre of Excellence in Plant Energy Biology. 

As Director of the new Centre of Excellence in Plants for Space, announced in November 2022, Professor Gilliham is leading a major global collaborative transdisciplinary venture partnering 15 academic institutions, five space agencies and enablers, five Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) companies, six education providers, and seven government and technology partners that collectively harness a global fit-for-purpose critical mass not found elsewhere. Foundational Australian University partners are the University of Adelaide, University of Melbourne, University of Western Australia, Flinders University and La Trobe University.

Alongside these contributions, Professor Gilliham is also a current Web of Science Highly Cited Author (1 of only 196 animal and plant scientists globally).
