Professor Vladimir Jiranek, was recently appointed a Commissioner for the International Commission on Yeast (ICY), joining Prof Sakkie Pretorius of Macquarie University as representatives for Australia.The appointment was made at the ICY’s 14th Congress, held in Japan last week.
The ICY originated 50 years ago at the 2nd International Symposium on Yeasts held in Bratislava (Slovakia) in 1966, with the mission of facilitating dissemination of knowledge and to stimulate cooperation among yeast researchers and students from research institutes, universities and industry in yeast research.
The ICY organises a quadrennial meeting as well as the International Specialised Symposium on Yeast in the intervening years. The 15th ICY meeting will be held in Vienna in 2020, while the 33rd ISSY will be held in Cork in 2017.
Professor Jiranek is a Professor in Oenology in the University of Adelaide’s School of Agriculture, Food and Wine, and the Director of the ARC Training Centre for Innovative Wine Production located here at the Waite.
