A postdoctoral researcher who has spent much of his early career looking to overcome barriers to successful faba bean production has won the 2026 Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) Emerging Leader award for the southern region.
Dr James Manson, who now works with CSIRO, was presented with the award at the GRDC Grains Research Updates in Bendigo on Tuesday.
The GRDC Emerging Leader award recognises the commitment of an early career professional working in the grains industry who has already contributed to the future of the industry and is emerging as an industry leader in their field of endeavour.
Recipients are selected by the GRDC southern panel in recognition of their demonstrated leadership, commitment to industry collaboration and contribution to creating enduring profitability for Australian grain growers.
Dr Manson was previously a research and extension officer with Southern Farming Systems where he worked across a range of initiatives, including annual ryegrass management in the high-rainfall zone, faba bean agronomy for Tasmanian growers, faba bean nodulation on acid soils and nitrogen fixation, among an array of other topics.
GRDC Southern Panel Chair Andrew Russell said Dr Manson’s contribution to the Australian grain industry was immense for someone at such an early stage of their career.
“James’ dedication, discipline and willingness to share expertise are huge assets for our industry and its ongoing success,” he said.
“He has used his extensive research experience to provide valuable input into many projects, especially in the legume space and faba beans in particular.
