The Waite Peer Mentor Program began last year with a small but committed group of 2nd and 3rd year Bachelor of Agricultural Science and Viticulture and Oenology students. During 2018 the Peer Mentor Program grew until there was a group of 19 students ready to help their peers and new students with any aspect of student life at Waite.
It’s already been an exciting start to 2019 with the addition to the program of three new positions, Senior Peer Mentors (SPM)! These positions have been filled by 3rd year Agricultural Science students Katelyn Heinrich, Natasha Hallett and Codee Leiblich. Katelyn and Natasha’s positions are funded by the Faculty of Sciences and all three of the Waite SPM’s will work with a larger team of mentors at North Terrace.
After winning the position Katelyn commented: “I am very excited to be a Senior Peer Mentor, it will be great to work with you and Tash.”
Katelyn, Natasha and Codee have lots of great ideas about how to make the Peer Mentor Program even better. Their first event will be Waite O-Day on February 28th where they will be an important point of contact for all our new 1st year students and hopefully recruiting some new 2nd year students to become mentors.
Highlights from the Peer Mentor Program in 2018 included:
- Professional speed dating evening
- Lunchtime Hub drop-in sessions
- First-second year transition lunch
- Mid-year O-Day
“We are really excited to play a bigger role in the Peer Mentor Program and start implementing some new ideas!” said Natasha.
You will be able to find the SPM’s hanging out in the Hub, probably wearing bright pink Hi-viz vests!
