Virtual StatsPD@Waite meeting

May 9, 2023, 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Every month, the professional development meetings of statisticians and data scientists at Waite, known as StatsPD@Waite, bring together specialists in various aspects of data sciences in agriculture from Waite, Roseworthy and Adelaide.

Please join us for the next StatsPD@Waite seminar where Ari Verbyla from the University of Queensland will present on modelling with splines.

Also please note that the StatsPD@Waite meetings are recorded. If you have a question to the speaker but had rather not be recorded, please send your question via chat during the meeting and it will be asked on your behalf.

Please email Beata Sznajder for details of the Zoom meeting.

Title: Models based on penalties: splines

Presenter: Ari Verbyla, AV Data Analytics and QAAFI, UQ

Splines have been used for modelling trends for a very long time.  In this PD, the ideas behind penalties will be presented.  This talk will review constrained estimation, so-called hard-edge constraints, and move on to estimation using soft edge constraints.  Continuous and discrete penalties will be considered, leading to natural cubic smoothing splines, P-splines and regression splines.  The link with mixed models, effective degrees of freedom, and issues concerning model selection will be discussed.  Depending on time, tensor product splines and splines for genetic modelling may be discussed.
