Dr Kim Johnson – Don’t stress, cell walls to the rescue
Senior Research Fellow, La Trobe Institute for Agriculture & Food (LIAF)
Cell walls are dynamic structures that provide stability and shape to cells and act as both a structural and functional barrier to the environment. Cell wall integrity proteins located at the cell wall-plasma membrane-cytoplasmic interface play essential roles in wall dynamics and monitoring. Shown to sense defects in the wall and initiate signalling pathways, they play key roles during development in response to physical stress, both internal and external. This talk will discuss the role of glycoproteins and mechanosensensors in cell wall integrity and regulation of plant growth.
WHEN: Thursday 28th October 2021, 10am
About the speaker
Dr Kim Johnsons work aims to understand how physical stresses, such as those generated by growth and wind, are sensed to initiate pathways that regulate the composition of the cell wall and therefore plant form. Dr Johnson is a senior lecturer in the La Trobe Institute for Agriculture and Food, CI in the ARC ITRH Medicinal Agriculture (2019 – 2024) and has previously worked in the ARC CoE Plant Cell Walls.
