Title: Reimagining weed management in the grains industry: The GRDC Weed Management Initiative
Abstract: The GRDC Weed Management Initiative (WMI) is a 5.5 year and $47 million investment led by GRDC and developed to support Australian grain growers to manage one of the most persistent and costly challenges facing farming businesses. The WMI is established as a set of 4 collaborating nodes across Australia. The University of Adelaide hosts the node in the GRDC Southern Region. Weeds cost grain producers across Australia about $4.1 billion per annum in lost production and control costs. In addition, the increasing incidence of herbicide resistance is increasing the complexity and cost of managing weeds. This presentation will cover the role the University of Adelaide will play in the WMI and the research activities that will be conducted to address this problem.
Bio: Prof Chris Preston is a Professor of Weed Management at the University of Adelaide where he has worked on the understanding and management of herbicide resistant weeds. Chris leads the southern region node of the WMI.
