Abstract
The rate of genetic gain can be modulated by changes in generation turnover rate and access to novel allelic diversity from closely related progenitor subspecies or compatible secondary genepool species. Using chickpea as an example, I will present an overview of accelerated single seed descent (aSSD), how combining with interspecific crossing has enabled the efficient development of novel allelic combinations for genetic improvement efforts and how aSSD approaches are being harnessed within a genomic selection platform for improved disease resistance.
About the speaker
Dr Janine Croser joined SARDI in 2022 as Program Leader, Crop Improvement after two decades at The University of WA, where she led an externally funded team focused on development and delivery of techniques to speed genetic gain including single cell mutation with high throughput selection, accelerated single seed descent and rapid allele mining platforms for pulses, pastures, oilseeds and functional foods. Complementing her role at SARDI, Janine is an Adjunct with UWA, an Affiliate of University of Adelaide and an active partner in her family broad-acre farming business.
