A free public lecture brought to you by UniSA Mount Gambier. Presented by Professor Matthew Tucker from University of Adelaide.
Professor Matthew Tucker is the Interim Director of the Waite Institute at the University of Adelaide (UoA) and co-Chair of the Adelaide University signature research theme for Food, Agriculture and Wine. He earned his PhD in Plant Science from the UoA and CSIRO, followed by postdoctoral research at the University of Freiburg in Germany. With a research focus on plant reproduction, Prof. Tucker’s work aims to enhance crop yield and grain quality through both traditional and next generation breeding technologies. Prof. Tucker was born in Mt Gambier and excited to be returning to our community!
Agricultural production is one of the pillars upon which South Australia is built. As a State, we are renowned for clean, plentiful and nutritious crop and food products that are highly sought by international trading partners. One of the most significant challenges we currently face is how to maintain or increase productivity and quality in the face of an unpredictable climate. At the same time, how can we navigate geopolitical instability where markets can change overnight.
In my lecture, I will discuss how researchers at the UoA are trying to address these grand challenges. In particular, I will discuss how new breeding technologies are providing opportunities to crack the code of climate change, and how a view of outer space is helping us to develop new opportunities for greater productivity on Earth.
