TERN presents: For the love of soils Seminar

Love soil science? Join us for a ‘For the love of Soil’ Valentine’s Day Soils Seminar!

We will be hosting Soil Scientists from The University of Sydney, who will share their research on soil microbiology, soil mapping and monitoring and future collaborations with the TERN soil archive.

What: Presentations by Quentin Styc and Peipei Xue, followed by morning tea, and meet & greet!

• Quentin Styc is a soil scientist specialising in digital soil mapping, soil monitoring, and soil security. He earned his PhD in digital soil mapping for available water capacity to improve irrigation in Southern France and is now a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Sydney. His recent work assesses human impact on soil using mapping techniques to distinguish preserved and disturbed areas. Beyond research, he is committed to making soil science accessible through presentations and social media, promoting awareness of soil as a finite resource and its role in environmental stability.
• Peipei Xue’s research interest is in soil microbial diversity, including bacteria fungi, and viruses. She studies soil microbial community structure along soil profiles and microbial distribution patterns at the regional and continental scales. Leveraging metagenomic and molecular techniques, she explores the links between soil microbial diversity and essential soil functions, such as carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling.
• Budiman Minasny is a Professor in soil-landscape modelling at the University of Sydney. He is the theme leader of Soil, Carbon, and Water at Sydney Institute of Agriculture. He is a soil scientist, previously awarded the QEII and the Future Fellowships from the Australian Research Council. He is passionate about the role of soil in managing climate change, food, water, energy security, and maintaining biodiversity.
