We are pleased to have A/Prof. Seth Shipman from UC San Francisco and also an Associate Investigator at the Gladstone Institutes, talking about “New technologies for detecting and recording molecular events in cells“.
A/Prof. Shipman and his team develop innovative strategies to manipulate cells for discovery and therapeutic purposes. Their work uses molecular parts sourced from bacteria to build new tools for understanding and intervening in human disease. His team has developed a strategy to record the order in which genes turn on in living cells by co-opting two bacterial immune systems: the retron system and the CRISPR system. His group is also working to improve the precision of genome-editing technologies to correct disease-causing mutations by using bacterial retroelements alongside CRISPR-Cas9.
