Who We Are
FOODplus, a unit within the School of Agriculture, Food and Wine and joint venture of the Child Nutrition Research Centre at SA Health & Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) and the University of Adelaide, develops research sustainability in food and nutrition as it relates to human health. It plays a key role in setting the national agenda in relation to Food and Nutrition. FOODplus identifies agricultural products that subscribe to the FOODplus mission and develop opportunities to leverage those products. Research focuses on translating nutrition research into food products with health outcomes and economic relationships with industry and agriculture.
“To improve the lives of young families through research excellence in food and nutritional sciences.”
Background
In recognition of the importance of linking agricultural sciences with health sciences, Child Nutrition Research Centre (CNRC) and the University of Adelaide have signed a joint venture agreement called FOODplus Research Centre that involves staff from SAHMRI and the Functional Food Group of the University.
Rationale
Directly connecting agriculture to health is one of the most logical of concepts and yet has rarely been attempted in research terms. There is good evidence that if people consume nutrient-rich foods they will have better health outcomes than those consuming energy-rich but nutrient-poor foods. It is now recognised that overcoming nutrient deficiencies in processed foods by the use of vitamin and mineral supplements is unsustainable. Foodplus will link health researchers with plant and animal scientists, growers and food producers for the development of nutritionally enhanced foods for better outcomes for all.
Research
The FOODplus Research Centre conducts both basic and applied research across a broad range of areas that link food, nutrition and sustainable agriculture to improve human health. We are committed to the conduct of high quality intervention studies to provide the best evidence to inform industry, policy makers and health professionals.
