Tickets have sold out quickly at past events. \nCoordinated by the Wine Innovation Cluster\, a partnership of the four leading Australian grape and wine research agencies\, Crush is hosted in the years not containing an Australian Wine Industry Technical Conference (AWITC). This year’s event will take place on Wednesday\, 28 October 2026 at the Adelaide Convention Centre. \nThe Crush symposium is an opportunity for researchers\, technical staff\, academics\, and students to share the latest knowledge in grape and wine science in Australia. The symposium offers a unique networking opportunity and the potential to develop industry and research collaborations. \nDinner is included with your registration. Pre-dinner drinks will be served after the final session\, followed by an exquisite two-course dinner. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIf you would like to get your brand in front of some of Australia’s leading minds in grape and wine science at the next event\, please contact the WIC Executive Officer (WICEO@awri.com.au).

SUMMARY:WRI Seminar Series: Professor Renyou Gan\, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University\, 2026 AU International Fellow Award Recipient
DESCRIPTION:Professor Renyou Gan\, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University\, 2026 AU International Fellow Award Recipient\n \nDate: Thursday\, 29 October 10-11 am\,  SARDI Auditorium \nTitle: Plant-Based Functional Ingredients and Gut Health: From Food Sources to Translational Nutrition \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Abstract: This presentation will share our recent research work in plant functional ingredients\, like their natural sources\, extraction technologies\, characterization\, and biological evaluation\, with a specific focus on their interactions with gut microbiota. Specific examples may include the utilization of dark tea theabrownins for the management of fatty liver disease\, sweet tea (Lithocarpus litseifolius) dihydrochalcones for the management of colitis\, and functional plant polysaccharides as promising prebiotics. Finally\, I will touch a little on the innovation of novel food functional ingredients from gut microbiota-mediated biotransformation of dietary phytochemicals\, targeting to develop gut metabolite-based next-generation nutraceuticals. \nBio: Professor Gan is an Assistant Professor and Presidential Young Scholar in Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s Department of Food Science and Nutrition. His research expertise lies in the discovery and characterisation of food-derived bioactives\, with a strategic focus on valorisation of functional plants and food by-products. By integrating chemical profiling with translational nutrition\, his research develops sustainable\, evidence-based solutions that transform low-value food wastes into health-promoting functional products. Since 2020\, Professor Gan has been listed in Stanford University “World Top 2% Scientists” in the field of Food Science and Nutrition and Dietetics. He was also listed as a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher in the field of Agricultural Sciences/Food Sciences in 2021\, 2022 and 2023\, and was listed in the Research.com Best Biology and Biochemistry Scientists in 2024 and 2025.    \nhttps://www.polyu.edu.hk/fsn/people/academic-staff/prof-gan-renyou/ \nProfessor Gan is an inaugural 2026 Adelaide University International Fellows Award recipient \nhttps://adelaide.edu.au/partners-and-community/global-partnerships/how-to-partner-with-us/international-fellows-award/2026-international-fellows-award-recipients/  \nProfessor Gan will work with Adelaide University researchers to establish an integrated research platform between Adelaide University and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University to upcycle South Australian wine and food by-products (e.g.\, grape pomace and spent grains) into functional ingredients.  \nHis Adelaide University host is Dr Bo Wang\, School of Agriculture\, Food and Wine\, College of Sciences. \nFollowed by morning tea

SUMMARY:WRI Seminar Series: Dr Karen Massel\, University of Queensland
DESCRIPTION:Dr Karen Massel\, University of Queensland\n \nDate: Thursday\, 05 November; 10-11 am\,  SARDI Auditorium \nTitle: Transforming crops with gene editing \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Bio: Dr Karen Massel is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Queensland\, where she applies gene editing and plant biotechnology tools to improve cereal crops for food and feed security. Trained in Canada and Australia\, she specialises in CRISPR/Cas9-based editing of sorghum and barley to enhance protein quality\, yield\, water-use efficiency and climate resilience. Her work has delivered genetic improvements that double protein digestibility in sorghum\, increase yield through canopy redesign\, and reduce methane emissions from forage systems\, with these innovations now extending to other pulses and forage grasses. Much of her recent work focuses on partnering with plant breeders to translate research outcomes into practical breeding strategies\, and to find novel ways of enhancing breeding programs through biotechnological means. She is a strong advocate for the responsible use of both GMO and non-GMO approaches to crop development\, particularly where they advance sustainable agriculture. She also actively engages with communities\, schools and public forums to explain these technologies and counter misinformation. \nFollowed by morning tea \nhttps://adelaide.zoom.us/j/88324941961?pwd=iBEvCU8wU2bKbEa3JaDzLIDGOZtEkj.1 \nWebinar ID: 883 2494 1961\, Passcode:429141
