Aug 7, 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Diving into Data
Leigh M. Schmidtke, Acting Director, National Wine and Grape Industry Centre, Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, 2678
This seminar will be held next Monday 7th August from 4-5pm in the AWRI Seminar Rooms (level 2 WIC building) followed by drinks and nibbles.
It has never been easier to acquire measures of sample composition with some instruments (FT-IR, NMR etc) capable of generating millions of data points for a single sample in a relatively short period. But more data does not necessarily mean better information or understanding of a process. Improved data outcomes arise from careful planning, data collection and analysis. The first step is to carefully consider what data is required and often using a designed of experiments approach in the planning phase will minimising unnecessary experiments. In this presentation the application of design of experiments concepts to optimise sample measurements will be demonstrated. Often having optimised sample analysis parameters, many measures of sample composition are derived from multiple platforms, processes and instrumentation. Orthogonal multiblock data analysis methods will be presented that illustrate how balanced designs coupled with sophisticated chemometric tools can be used to extract meaningful information from complex data sets. Finally some examples of common errors in data analysis will be discussed with suggestions on how to avoid drowning in the tsunami of information.
