Urrbrae House Twilight Concert: ‘Duology’
Sep 4, 5:30 pm$20
Vivente Music presents “Duology” – a twilight concert at Urrbrae House.
Minas Berberyan – violin
Keith Crellin – viola
In 1783 Mozart wrote his Duo for violin and viola in G major K.423, as a favour to his composer friend Michael Haydn (the lesser known younger brother of Joseph Haydn). Michael Haydn had received a commission to compose 6 duets for violin and viola, but he was only able to complete 4 of the 6 duets required due to a protracted illness.
Ironicaly M. Haydn’s commission came from Hieronymus Colloredo, the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg, who “sometimes played the violin in the court orchestra”. Colloredo was also an old nemesis of Mozart since he fired Wolfgang only two years earlier. It must have given Mozart immense pleasure to know that he was tricking the Archbishop by penning those works in M. Haydn’s name, particularly as they received much more praise and attention.
Compare Mozart’s composition to one of M.Haydn duos and make your conclusions. Also in the program – Three Madrigals by Martinu.
Refreshments will be served prior to the concert.
