Sep 15, 12:00 pm - 12:45 pm
The University of Adelaide Plant Science Department invites you to the following seminar.
Dr Mariano Cossani, SARDI
Impact of resources co-limitation on grain crops: interactions between water and N
Time: Friday 15th September, 12pm – 12:45pm
Venue: Plant Genomics Centre Seminar Room
Crop growth and productivity depend on four resources: water and nutrients from the soil, and CO2 and radiation from the atmosphere. The limitation to crop growth has largely focused on individual resources but interactions are often large and agronomically important. Ecological theory predicts that growth is maximised when all resources are equally limiting. Therefore, for a given intensity of stress, resource co-limitation maximises growth and grain yield. An update about the latest research on resource co-limitation in grain crops and on current projects being carried out in South Australia will be presented.
About the speaker
Dr. Cossani is agronomist by the University of Buenos Aires -Argentina, and joined SARDI in 2016 following five years of working in heat tolerance within the physiology group of the wheat breeding program of CIMMYT. His previous experience was related to nitrogen and abiotic stress interactions of cereals under Mediterranean conditions during his Masters and PhD studies in the University of Lleida -Spain. His work in SARDI centers around improving profitability and reducing risk by managing nitrogen in wheat and extreme temperatures of pulses crops. His work is also related to the development of tools to estimate resources limitation.
