The Friends of the Waite Arboretum Inc. will hold their Annual General Meeting on Monday 16th April 2018 at 7.30pm.
Venue: Urrbrae House drawing room, Waite Campus.
Speaker – Marne Durnin
If you go down to the (grassy!) woods today….
In the 1800’s the Waite Arboretum site was a Grey Box grassy woodland forming part of the Black Forest; a dangerous place harbouring thieves and cattle rustlers. Kraehenbuehl wrote that it was “cut down under the orders of Governor Robe because he was fearful of a possible Russian invasion from marines who might have sought shelter in the forest.”
Today, Grey Box grassy woodlands are listed as endangered by the Australian Government and South Australia has just 1% of its pre-European grasslands remaining. People across south eastern Australia are trying to change that.
When we think of grassy woodlands, we tend to think about trees, but most of the biodiversity is on the ground in the ‘grassy’ bit. Marne will talk about why the grassy bit matters and what people are doing to restore the ground flora in grassy woodlands. She will introduce you to some innovative groups and methods and then tell you about her native grass research plans for the NW corner of the Arboretum.
